Question

What are the nutrient functional claims of Oligofructose-Inulin and its dosage rate according to Singaporean Food Regulations?

ANSWER

According to A Guide to Food Labelling and Advertisement, the nutrient functional claims of an Oligofructose-Inulin mixture are as follows:

  • Inulin helps improve calcium absorption.
  • Its prebiotic effects promote the growth of good Bifidus bacteria that can help maintain a healthy digestive system.
  • Inulin helps support growth of beneficial bacteria/ intestinal flora in the gut.
  • Oligofructose stimulates bifidobacteria, resulting in a significant increase of beneficial bifidobacteria in the intestinal tract. At the same time, the presence of less desirable bacteria is significantly reduced.
  • Inulin helps increase intestinal bifidobacteria and helps maintain a good intestinal environment.

The name of the prebiotic must be specified in the statement of ingredients whenever a claim is made in relation to that prebiotic. There are no minimum quantities of prebiotics required to be added for use of other functional claims.

The quantity present in the food product should be safe and suitable for general consumption and is sufficient to deliver the intended functional claims. Companies must be able to substantiate with acceptable documentary proof/ scientific evidence when queried.

* Calcium content of the food product must meet the requirements of regulations 8A and 11 of Singapore’s Food Regulations; a statement of the amount of inulin present in each serving or other equivalents of the product must be declared on the product label; and food manufacturers who wish to use the claim on their food products will have to ensure that the amount and combinations of shorter and longer chain inulins present in the product is able to bring about the claimed effect.
